Kamala Harris, the Vice President’s relative silence about the matters of border security and immigration – since embracing an oversight role on those issues – continued to draw more attention to media scrutiny Saturday. It was the eighteenth day that the vice president went into without holding a press conference with reporters about her responsibilities on the matters, since getting the immigration assignment from Joe Biden.
The Washington Examiner published an article with the title “Kamala Harris MIA on the border crisis.” Additionally, the article recapped Harris’ recent visits to Illinois and Connecticut, California on issues unrelated to the migratory situation along the southern American border. Jen Psaki, the White House Press Secretary also quoted the same story, responding Wednesday to queries about when the vice president would be visiting the border area.
According to the Examiner, Psaki says that she is sure it will be soon. NBC News published an article on Saturday title Confusion clouds Harris’s immigration role. Furthermore, the NBC article argued that the White House create misunderstanding because it didn’t clarify what specific responsibilities Harris would be about the migratory crisis. According to NBC News, Psaki said that the Northern Triangle is not the same as the border crisis.
The same NBC article said that the anonymous White House aides claimed that Harris focused on researching issues regarding immigration and holding talks with Latin American representatives in behind-the-scenes work, instead of addressing the matter publicly. Likewise, another anonymous official source cited in the NBC article claimed that the migration topic remained a top priority for her.
Jacobson Departure would be Stepping Down as Southern Border Coordinator
On Friday, the Biden government announced that the former American ambassador to Mexico, Roberta Jacobson, would be resigning as southern border coordinator of Biden at the month-end. After the disclosure of the departure plans of Jacobson, NBC claimed an anonymous senior government official told the news agency that the response of the matter at the border would lead by Alejandro Mayorkas, the Homeland Security Secretary – who made his 3rd visit to the border area last week – and Xavier Becerra, the Health & Human Services Secretary.
The reporter further said that Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser claimed the role of Kamala Harris would be in pursuing a border-based governmental approach to migration matters, a description that claimed opposed the slight scope for the vice president that other administrative had described.
